Directions Builder



 The Directions Builder allows the practitioner to give very specific directions on how the medication will need to be taken or administered. This is done to ensure that the medication that has been prescribed is taken in the most efficient way to treat the condition and symptoms of a patient.

To create a script, please refer to the user manual: Basic Script Features. To access the Directions Builder, please refer to the user manual: Advanced Scripting & Generic Medicine.

  • Start on the Script screen.


  • Click on the Expand button to expand the directions builder. This allows the practitioner to add very specific instructions on how to take the medication, these instructions will pull through into the directions field.


  • The Script line will expand.
 

  • An explanation of each field will be given:


    • Time of Day: This gives the patient an indication of a time frame when the practitioner suggests that the medication need to be taken.
      • Click on the drop-down menu to select a relevant option:

      • In the morning: The prescribed medication needs to be taken as early as possible after sunrise, between 6 am and 9 am.
      • In the afternoon: The prescribed medication needs to be taken after 12 pm before 6 pm.
      • In the evening: The prescribed medication needs to be taken after 6 pm before 9 pm. 
      • 3 hourly: The prescribed medication needs to be taken every 3 hours. 
      • 4 hourly: The prescribed medication needs to be taken every 4 hours.
      • 6 hourly: The prescribed medication needs to be taken every 6 hours.
      • 8 hourly: The prescribed medication needs to be taken every 8 hours.
      • 12 hourly: The prescribed medication needs to be taken every 12 hours.
      • As needed: The prescribed medication needs to be taken when the patient feels that they need to take the medication.


    • Meal Relationship: To indicate if the medication should be taken before, after or with meals. 
      • Click on the drop-down menu to select a relevant option:

      • With meals: The prescribed medication needs to be taken during mealtime.
      • Before meals: The prescribed medication needs to be taken at least 30 min to 1 hour before mealtime.
      • After meals: The prescribed medication needs to be taken at least 30 min to 1 hour after mealtime.


    • Dosage: How many items should be taken.
      • Click on the Dosage field to input the desired amount or click on the up and down selectors to select the desired amount. 


    • Route: How the medication should be administered.
      • Click on the drop-down menu to select a relevant option:

      • Oral: The prescribed medication needs to be taken by drinking the medication. 
      • Rectal: The prescribed medication needs to be placed into the rectum.
      • Inhaled: The prescribed medication needs to be inhaled, through an inhaler or mask.
      • Nasal: The prescribed medication needs to be taken up through the nasal passages.
      • Topical: The prescribed medication needs to be applied to the skin.
      • Infusion: The prescribed medication needs to be taken through a needle or catheter.
      • Intramuscular: The prescribed medication needs to be taken by injecting the medication deep into the muscle tissue.
      • Intravenous: The prescribed medication needs to be taken via a drip where the needle is placed into the vein.
      • Enteric: The prescribed medication needs to be crushed before being taken orally.
      • Otic: The prescribed medication needs to be administered into the ear canals.
      • Ophthalmic: The prescribed medication needs to be taken by putting the medication into the eyes.
      • Sublingual: The prescribed medication needs to be dissolved under the tongue.
      • Buccal: The prescribed medication needs to be given between the gums and the inner lining of the cheek.
      • Transdermal: The prescribed medication needs to be administered through a transdermal patch that is placed on the skin.
      • Subcutaneous: The prescribed medication needs to be administered using a short needle and injecting the medication between the skin and muscle.
      • Vaginal: The prescribed medication needs to be administered through the vagina canal.


    • Frequency: How many times a day the medication should be taken. 
      • Click on the Frequency field to input the desired amount or click on the up and down selectors to select the desired amount. 
  • Click on the exclamation mark (!) button next to the directions field to calculate the directions from the entered values, this will also calculate the number of items that need to be dispensed.
